Biblical Website Strategies for Your Music Business
How to use Your Sphere of Influence also called Measure of Rule
By Ricardo Butler / ReAsOn DiSciPLe
In this lesson you will learn how to go to the areas where the people you can best reach are crying out and congregating at. You will pick 4 social media platforms/networks and start building a following of subscribers to “baptize” unto your email list.
This is a term we church folk use when leaders (pastors and preachers) try to lead away (or astray) Christians from one church ministry to another church ministry. The term is sheep stealing.
The Scriptures say,
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. All that ever came before Me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” (John 10:1, 8, 10).
“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves [non-believing and unconverted men] enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall [believing and carnal] men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw [divide, steal] away disciples after them.” (Acts 20:28-30).
So instead of these leaders sharing the influence and oversight of a united church, it turns out that some of them started to peel off and do their own thing stealing some sheep from the larger gathering. This is sheep stealing. And this now happens more often in Christian businesses.
The primary cause of this in business is because we don’t have a clearly defined target market. By this lesson you should know “The Cry of God’s People” that God has called and equipped you to serve in a business capacity.
There is no need to compete or steal sheep or even the fish in another man’s fishing hole when you know who you are called to serve in your music business. But even better though is when both (or as many as there are of you spiritual hip-hop entrepreneurs) can share the same fish and sheep to network and partner up together to serve. You can cover more ground and meet more needs for the glory of the Father’s image (Christ) in your music business.
I am pretty sure you’ve heard me somewhere teaching about Acts 1:8.
“But ye [ALL of you] shall receive power [This is the SAME power (anointing) to get wealth called the Fruit and Gifts of the Spirit], after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).
By now you should already know that I believe the church exists on FOUR levels according to the Acts 1:8 Principle, which is:
• Jerusalem (LOCALLY, HOME, COMMUNITY, CITY)
• Judea (STATEWIDE, COUNTY, REGIONAL)
• Samaria (NATIONALLY, COUNTRY, HEMISPHERE)
• Uttermost Part of the Earth (GLOBALLY, INTERNATIONALLY, UNIVERSALLY)
I believe that God wants us to fellowship with believers on all of these levels. We’ve got believers all over the planet now and with social media the world just got a whole lot smaller. So fulfilling the great commission to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom to all nations from your laptop or desktop (or phone) just got easier. This is how we also take the land by faith. We spread out from an epicenter and work our way from where we are until the fulfilling of the Scripture that says,
“… the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:9 & Habakkuk 2:14).
Now I want to show you this from another perspective. The Lord gave me this creative revelation about Acts 1:8 concerning your web strategy social media. It’s a principle that can apply to social media and stay true to the reaching out to the world through your music, especially the fan base & target market that He has called us to serve.
I think the revelation was sparked from something I came across back when I was at Full Sail University. But I actually didn’t get the revelation until long after I graduated from the school. I can’t remember what I was doing to trigger the revelation, but this is cool! So pay attention. I don’t want to confuse anyone with this.
When you are seeking out lost sheep to build fan base with, music marketers, especially online, will tell you to go to the places online where your target audience hangs out. For you to do this, you have to KNOW your sheep like a Shepherd/Pastor, right?
Let me show you how this works in my own music business. You need a Jerusalem (LOCALLY, HOME, COMMUNITY, CITY), a Judea (STATEWIDE, COUNTY, REGIONAL), a Samaria (NATIONALLY, COUNTRY, HEMISPHERE), and an Uttermost Part of the Earth (GLOBALLY, INTERNATIONALLY, UNIVERSALLY). But you also need these four online.
So for me, my top four social media sites that drive me more traffic because that’s where my fan base/target audience hangs out at is …
This is actually the order of where I get the most traffic from according to the audience that the Lord has sent me to reach out to and serve with both my music ministries and my music businesses.
• Facebook is my Jerusalem
• Stumble Upon is my Judea
• LinkedIn is my Samaria
• Twitter is my Uttermost Parts of the World
So what you need to do it pick the four social media sites that your target audience/fan base hangs out the most. It’s easier to influence those who already have an affinity for your music or genre then to go to social media networks where there is no common ground or natural connection and affinity.
After finding out the people you are called to serve you need to go where they hang out. Paul did this all through Acts by going into the secular marketplaces and the “internet cafes” of his day. From there he would reach out, draw a crowd, preach to them, lead them to Christ and His Kingdom, and gather them as a flock for fellowship. From that point he would mature them up a bit through the process we call discipleship, train the more fruitful and influential for leadership, appoint them to be elders and start over again in another city. The time on how long this all took was not the issue. He stayed as long as they needed him and then He moved on when the job was done or as the Lord led.
Measure of Rule
Do you want to know one of the reasons why most music artist and businesses (Christian or secular) fail? Because they either …
1) Have not found out their actual and true target audience/niche/market or fan base and …
2) They later deviate from that audience they were called to serve trying to reach another audience, genre, or style of music they were not called or equipped to serve.
And this will kill your music business and creativity as a hip-hop artist.
The Apostle Paul said,
“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise [Comparing your music business/ministry to another will always lead you to try to perform like them in an effort to get what they have and where they are]. But we will not boast of things without our measure [outside of our target market/audience/niche/fan base], but according to the measure of the rule [circle of influence] which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you [God only extended Paul’s influence and authority over the regions and ‘territorial’ boundaries of God]. For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure [We did not go outside of our target market/niche/audience/fan base], as though we reached not unto you [the Corinthians was part of Paul’s target audience or fan base]: for we are come as far as TO you also in preaching the gospel of Christ [If Paul were in the music industry he only advertised and sold music and merch’ to those whom God called him to serve]: not boasting of things without our measure [outside of our target market/audience/niche/fan base], that is, of other men’s labors [Paul didn’t sheep steal or try to compete and steal fans from others in his industry]; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly [What Paul was saying here is that once his target audience/market/niche/fan base was served and faithfully taken care of God would give him more to take care of faithfully. God would grow Paul’s music business little by little. He that is faithful in little will be faithful with much], to preach the gospel in the regions BEYOND you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand [God would only scale Paul’s music business only more and more in areas of the music market that have not yet been reached by God’s other hip-hop entrepreneurs looking for the same music style and genre that Paul offered]. But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord [Paul tells us that we are to give glory to God who gives us the whole business idea, products, music, services, marketing plan, and audience to serve as God’s idea only. It will all work if you do Music Business in God’s Image and His way]. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.” (2nd Corinthians 10:12-18).
The Message Bible of this passage says,
“We’re not, understand, putting ourselves in a league with those who boast that they’re our superiors. We wouldn’t dare do that. But in all this comparing and grading and competing, they quite miss the point.
We aren’t making outrageous claims here. We’re sticking to the limits of what God has set for us. But there can be no question that those limits reach to and include you. We’re not moving into someone else’s “territory.” We were already there with you, weren’t we? We were the first ones to get there with the Message of Christ, right? So how can there be any question of overstepping our bounds by writing or visiting you?
We’re not barging in on the rightful work of others, interfering with their ministries, demanding a place in the sun with them. What we’re hoping for is that as your lives grow in faith, you’ll play a part within our expanding work. And we’ll all still be within the limits God sets as we proclaim the Message in countries beyond Corinth. But we have no intention of moving in on what others have done and taking credit for it. “If you want to claim credit, claim it for God.” What you say about yourself means nothing in God’s work. It’s what God says about you that makes the difference.”
While you should choose to master relationship building on four social media platforms don’t forget to go ONLY to your target audience. Don’t steal customers. We do not want to do music business the way the world does. Their pattern is all screwed up.
Collaborate and connect in a way that combines forces to the benefit of the partnerships and the fans (a win/win/win situation) that the Spirit leads to. That’s a good thing! But competition in the Body is not a good thing. God LOVES unity according to Psalms 133 (and everywhere else in the Scriptures)! You should too!
Another example of this principle can be seen in the Old Testament with the 12 tribes of Israel. I am talking mostly about the sons of Jacob. They were the fathers (patriarch) of each tribe.
Now think about this: I am pretty sure that though they lived together in their early years as a small village, none of the fathers of each (future) tribe disciplined the children of the next tribe.
Would you go next door into your neighbor’s house to spank their kids? Would you allow your neighbors to knock on your door anytime of the day and spank your kids? What if they saw your kids get in trouble when you were not around?
Do you see what I am saying? Each of the sons of Jacob had the authority over their own tribe. This principle applies to apostles (and all the five fold ministry) in the New Testament that they did not go into each other’s garden, or measure of rule, or on another man’s foundation to discipline the other’s spiritual children in the Lord.
You need to see your customers/clients/fans (and other people’s audience, harvest, and target market) as your own spiritual children in the Lord. Don’t go spanking (selling music to) their children (clients, fans) as well as don’t let them do it unto you and yours.
Paul wrote this once:
“Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus [‘To Titus, mine own son after the common faith’ (Titus 1:4)] with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them [Jewish Christians] that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them [the apostle’s] which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek [being a Gentile, Heathen], was compelled to be circumcised [by the Jewish Christians or by the 12 Apostles]: and that because of false brethren unawares [among the Jerusalem church] brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: to whom [these false Christians] we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. But of these [false Christians] who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they [these false Christians] who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me.” (Galatians 2:1-5).
Because Titus (Paul’s spiritual son in the faith) was under the authority and “jurisdiction” of Paul, the other apostles, Jewish Christians, church at Jerusalem, or false Christian (that were probably Jewish Pharisees) had no authority to tell Paul’s “client” what to do concerning circumcision. Paul protected his own sheep, garden, and tribe in the Lord. You most do the same those in your sphere of influence, wherever you choose to do your music business on the many social media networks.
Also, Paul taught his spiritual children and churches he founded and established in the Lord to stay away from anything that deviated from God’s plan for them through what Paul imparted to them. He said,
“I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. For though ye have ten thousand instructors [teachers, influencers, leaders, coaches, mentors] in Christ, yet have ye not many [spiritual] fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore [For THIS reason] I beseech [beg, plead, pray] you, be ye followers [imitators, disciples] of me. For this cause [reason, purpose] have I sent unto you Timotheus [Timothy], who is my beloved son [but your spiritual elder brother], and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of MY WAYS which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church [in every church Paul founded and established]. Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. For the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. What will ye [What do all of you desire’]? Shall I come unto you with a rod [of discipline and treat you like children and babes], or in love, and in the spirit of meekness [to you as mature sons]?” (1st Corinthians 14-21).
You need to warn your fans, clients, customers, and audience about others out there that might sway them away from your tribe and measure of rule. And those who learn more of who you are or what you are about (they now called them ‘raving fans’ that buy all your music products, merchandise, and services) you make them “elder sons/daughters” like Timothy and Titus as facilitators of your websites and maybe even employees, team members, and eventually partners in your record label. These will know more about “your ways” in Christ concerning your music business.
That is the ultimate goal right? To grow profitable and scale to where you can hire others and bless them financially for the giving of their gifts, experience, talents, and passion for your vision in the Lord.
Circle of Influence
So where or how do you get started after you’ve chosen your four social media platforms? I’ve attached an image here to give you an example how Christ did it.
