Teaching & Instructing
“Hear counsel [Heb: ‘advice; by implication, plan; also prudence:–advice, advisement, counsel, purpose’], and receive instruction [Gk: ‘chastisement; figuratively, reproof, warning or instruction; also restraint:–bond, chastening, chastisement, check, correction, discipline, doctrine, instruction, rebuke’], that thou mayest be wise [Gk: ‘to be wise (in mind, word or act):–X exceeding, teach wisdom, be (make self, show self) wise, deal (never so) wisely, make wiser’] in thy latter end [Gk: ‘the last or end, hence, the future; also posterity:–(last, latter) end (time), hinder (utter) -most, length, posterity, remnant, residue, reward’].” (Proverbs 19:20).
“ALL Scripture [the ENTIRE Word of God, ALL 66 Books, both the Old and New Testament (without mixing them together, which Christ says then ‘both are preserved’)] is given by [divine] inspiration [Greek: God-breathed—out of the mouth] OF GOD, and is profitable [Gk: ‘Helpful or serviceable, i.e. advantageous:–profit, profitable; (to heap up, i.e. accumulate or benefit); gain, advantageth, profit’] …
1. … for doctrine [Gk: ‘Instruction (the function or the information):–doctrine, learning, teaching’—What should I believe?],
2. … for reproof [Gk: ‘Proof, conviction:–evidence, reproof; to confute, admonish; convict, convince, tell a fault, rebuke, reprove’—How should I NOT act?],
3. … for correction [Gk: ‘A straightening up again, i.e. (figuratively) rectification (reformation):–correction’—What should I NOT believe?],
4. … for instruction [Gk: ‘TUTORAGE, i.e. EDUCATION or TRAINING, by implication: DISCIPLINARY CORRECTION:–CHASTENING, CHASTISEMENT, INSTRUCTION (doctrinal), NURTURE’] in righteousness [Gk: ‘Equity (of character or act); specifically (Christian) justification:–righteousness’—How should I act?]: …
… that the man [no longer a child of God tossed to and from by every wind of doctrine, but a ‘MAN’] of God may be PERFECT [Gk: ‘fresh, i.e. (by implication) complete:—perfect, spiritually MATURE (manifesting FRUIT of the Spirit—love, faith, hope)’], THOROUGHLY FURNISH [Gk: ‘to finish out (time); figuratively, TO EQUIP FULLY (a teacher):–accomplish, thoroughly furnish’] unto ALL good works [prepared for their ministry].” (2nd Timothy 3:16-17).
Now we are getting into some know how to stuff. You might not have realized it but the Proverbs verse above is basically saying the same thing as Proverbs 22:6.
Proverbs 22:6 is more of God telling the parent how to raise up Christ-like children. But Proverbs 19:20 is more like God telling the child to listen to God Himself and the child’s parents.
Now for 2nd Timothy 3, Paul explains the reason why God even gave us His Spiritual Words in written form—the Bible. In short you can say that Paul was saying, “The Bible was given to make you more like Jesus and to train you for a ministry.”
That is what this passage is really saying. All the other things in there help us meet those goals like: doctrine (teaching), reproof, correction, and instructions (training) in righteousness. I think too many people put too much effort on the means and not the end result. I’m done with “Bible fights” and theological arguments over this and that. I’d rather let you see my light and taste my salt through my good works (aka ministry) and perhaps you might begin to praise God for the first time!
If we can get our children to align their hearts and minds to the will of God, the natural result will draw others for the first time to fall on their face and worship God.
Jesus Himself said,
“And I [Jesus], IF I be LIFTED UP [Gk: ‘to elevate (literally or figuratively):–exalt, lift up’] from the earth [from the carnal, the material, the physical, the literal, worldly IN THE BELIEVERS personal and public life to the Spirit, the invisible, the powerful like the wind], will draw [Gk: ‘DRAG’] ALL men [mankind, humanity] unto Me [by His Spirit].” (John 12:32).
You and your children’s chief purpose in this life (and the next) is to worship God and to glorify Him to others through what the Bible calls “good works.” Again, this is just another way to say through your ministry, calling, and mission that God has given the individual and the corporate church—the Body of Christ—as a whole.
Here are a few references of this truth:
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for THY PLEASURE [Gk: ‘a determination, i.e. (actively) choice (specially, purpose, decree; abstractly, volition) or (passively) inclination:– desire, pleasure, will’] they are and were created.” (Revelation 4:11).
Everything that we have to teach and instruct our children in “the Way that they should go” starts here first. Without getting this point across to them that God created them for His ultimate pleasure, plan, purpose, you will have already missed it. This is the foundation for all other truths. This is Stone One that we call in our ministry “Worship.” You can go get that e-Book called “The ‘MC’ Part 1 – Worship and Hip-Hop” to understand this more at.
“Herein is [THIS is HOW] My Father [IS] glorified, that ye [ALL OF YOU] bear MUCH fruit [make disciples]; so shall ye [ALL of you] be My disciples.” (John 15:8).
Reproducing what God has put in you into your children so that they take that and impart it into others in their circle of influence is how you glorify God the Father. This is basic discipleship right here!
There is another way that we can bring glory to God the Father. Jesus said,
“Let your LIGHT so shine before men, that they may see your good works [your ministry], and GLORIFY [worship] your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).
Your children have a ministry they are to fulfill. God’s got a mission for them that only they are uniquely created to fulfill. Paul said,
“Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfill it.” (Colossians 4:17).
“… neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts 20:24).
He placed great importance on ministry. I mean it still doesn’t come before worship, but it is pretty important. You have an assignment for your remaining time here in this life. And you need to let your kids know that they do likewise. You need to teach your kids that,
“… we ARE His [God’s] workmanship [Gk: ‘(GREATEST) achievement’], [RE-] created IN Christ Jesus unto good works [a specific ministry(s)], which God hath before ORDAINED [Gk: ‘to fit up in advance (literally or figuratively):–ordain before, prepare afore’] that we should walk in them [walk in a ministry].” (Ephesians 2:10).
Everybody who is called to be in a relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ has a ministry. And we need to teach and instruct our kids when their ministry gifts start to show up.
“Because in Him were ALL created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible … ALL were created BY HIM, AND FOR HIM.” (Colossians 1:16).
Your kids were created BY CHRIST AND FOR CHRIST’S eternal purposes! God has something amazing and awesome for them. And if you don’t think so, look back through the Old Testament and see how God moved on behalf of some of those super saints! And if that’s not impressive enough, go read Hebrews 11—the WHOLE chapter! If you and your children don’t get excited about God’s secret mission for them, I don’t know why you wake up every morning. It’s in Him we find our life and our purpose. I think that is awe-inspiring!
I actually have a song; it was my first Christian Hip-Hop song, called “Genesis, In the Beginning” (I thought that would be an appropriate title, being it was my first song in this NEW life.
What is a good starting point in developing are children up in the ways of the Lord? Why not start with teaching them about God. Share with them who He is and what He has done, is doing, and will do.
Here’s three Scriptures that will show how important in knowing Him first. Everything that you teach your kids concerning Kingdom life while here in this life is founded on these Scriptures.
“Let us hear the conclusion of the WHOLE matter: Fear [Heb: ‘to fear; morally, to REVERE:– REVERENCE, deep respect for, honor, worship’] God, and keep His commandments: for THIS IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
Worship God and keep His commandments! That’s it! But what commandments should we keep? Here’s a hint by Jesus:
“And Jesus answered him, The FIRST of ALL the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is ONE Lord: and thou shalt LOVE the Lord thy God with ALL thy HEART, and with ALL thy SOUL, and with ALL thy MIND, and with ALL thy STRENGTH: this is the FIRST commandment.” (Mark 12:29-30).
We are going to talk about the SECOND commandment in the next series called “The ‘MC’ Part 7 – Fellowship and Unity.”
The coolest thing the Lord revealed to me about all the things that God desires that we do (His Will), He is seeking one thing. He’s not seeking unity in the Body (though that’s important). He’s not seeking for disciples (though that’s important). He’s not seeking for you to “tell people about Jesus” (though that’s important). He’s not even seeking ministers with a full functional ministry (though that’s important).
So what is He seeking for? This is where we all miss it. I do to at times (much more than most of you). That’s the point of these books. It’s to get our priorities in order. It is to maximize our potential, time, and opportunities.
So again I ask, “What is God seeking for?”
Let’s go to the Father’s Son who knows Him the best. Jesus told the woman at the well,
“But the hour cometh, and NOW IS [‘right now IS the time’], when the TRUE worshippers shall worship the Father IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH: for the Father SEEKETH [Gk: ‘to seek (literally or figuratively); desire, endeavor, enquire (for), require, (X will) seek (after, for)’] such to worship him. God is Spirit: and they that worship Him MUST worship Him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24).
It would be necessary for us to “understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Eph. 5:17) and seek what God wants us to seek. He’s seeking those who will worship Him FIRST! Those people are the type of people who will seek wisdom with all their getting (Prov. 4:7). It’s these kid of people who will seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. (Matt. 6:33).
These are the things that your kids need to know first. It’s a relationship with the Father. This is called the “Way of the Lord.” The natural process that Jesus laid out went like this:
“And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons” (Mark 3:13-15).
Notice the divine order: First, “… He called to Him … “. Next is the preparation or process which includes training and impartation, “… that they might be with Him …”. Then they were commissioned, “… that He might send them out…”.
It’s worship FIRST, fellowship second, discipleship third, then ministry (to the Church) and evangelism (to the World) lastly.
Here’s another word from Jesus that puts this principle in perspective.
“Now it came to pass, as they went, that He entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard His Word. But Martha was cumbered [Gk: ‘DISTRACTED (with WORRY)’] about MUCH serving [‘serving’ is another word for ministry. Like I been saying, worship (a relationship with the Father and Son) comes BEFORE ministry (doing things FOR God and Christ)], and came to Him, and said, Lord, dost Thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve [do ministry] alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful [worried] and troubled about many things: but ONE THING is needful [Gk: ‘mandatory’]: and Mary hath CHOSEN THAT GOOD PART, which shall NOT be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42).
Teach your kids first how to hear from the Lord and all other instructions on the Will of God (like ministry) will follow this. And you do this by modeling this or by being an example.
