“Now His [Jesus’] parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it [Why does this verse say ‘mother’ and not ‘father and mother’?]. But they, supposing Him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought Him among their kinsfolk [family] and acquaintance [and friends]. And when they found Him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking Him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. And when they saw Him, they were amazed: and His mother said unto Him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold, THY FATHER [referring to Joseph] and I have sought Thee sorrowing. And He said unto them, How is it that ye [both of you] sought Me? Wist [Know] ye [BOTH OF YOU] not that I MUST BE [Gk: ‘it is mandatory’] about MY FATHER’S BUSINESS? And they understood not the saying which He spake unto them. And He went down with THEM, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto THEM: but HIS MOTHER [not Joseph, but Mary] kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus INCREASED [Gk: ‘To drive forward (as if by beating), i.e. (figuratively and intransitive) to advance (in amount, to grow; in time, to be well along):–increase, proceed, profit, be far spent, wax’] in WISDOM [Gk: ‘Wisdom (higher, spiritual)’] and [He increased in] STATURE [Gk: ‘Maturity (in years or size):–age, stature’], and [He increased] in FAVOR [Gk: ‘Graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):–acceptable, benefit, favor, gift, grace, gracious, joy, liberality, pleasure, thank, thanks, thankworthy’] WITH GOD and MAN.” (Luke 2:42-52).
This verse explains the development process of a child (and even the discipleship process for the new convert, which we will talk about in that chapter). It says, “Jesus grew,” in five areas: Intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social.
But again, that is not the main point of this section. We will talk a lot more about this later and in chapter 10. In this section I want to talk about the stepparent situation. I know for a fact that there have been many people in this situation or have grown up in this situation and probably will grow up I this situation.
I personally grew up in this situation, so I know what they are going through. My oldest daughter is growing up in this situation. I am her stepfather. My second older who does not live with me, which is my biological first born, she will most likely grow up in this situation, if her mom decides to remarry. And my daughter’s mom grew up in this situation herself. So my whole life and the people around me are surrounded by this situation.
I remember the first time I read the verses above about Jesus and His earthly parents. I’ve always known that Jesus was born of God. And that God was His Father, but I never looked at the other side of the coin to consider that while on earth Joseph was a stepfather. No where in the Scriptures is Joseph called the “the father of Jesus.”
After the Lord gave me verses and topics for this chapter, for the first time I noticed something that I have missed. I’m pretty sure others have caught this. But is says this,
“And when they saw Him, they were amazed: and His mother said unto Him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold, THY FATHER [referring to Joseph] and I have sought Thee sorrowing. And He said unto them, How is it that ye [both of you] sought Me? Wist [Know] ye [BOTH OF YOU] not that I MUST BE [Gk: ‘it is mandatory’] about MY FATHER’S BUSINESS? And they understood not the saying which He spake unto them.” (Luke 2:48-50).
Mary told Jesus that Joseph was His father. But Jesus answered back and said that He must be about His Father’s business. But they didn’t get it because in natural terms they were saying to themselves that Joseph doesn’t work in the temple. Joseph’s business was in carpentry.
I have seen people use this verse to try to teach that Jesus rebelled against his mom and step dad and that this kind of behavior is okay. But this hardly what this is teaching, especially if you read the rest of the verses that follow.
“And He went down with THEM, and came to Nazareth, and was subject [Gk: ‘to subordinate; reflexively, to obey:–be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto’] unto THEM.” (Luke 2:51).
Truthfully, I didn’t even have to give you the Greek definition of that word, “subject” because it is kind of self-explanatory.
So my question to you artist of God is this: Were you “subject” unto your stepparents? If you were than good! You can impart this into your children. But if not then what are you going to do about it? You cannot give away what you do not have.
So what are we to do? Well, you can call upon the Father God and be “subject” unto Him. And as He shows you how He treats His “step” children who have been adopted into His family, you can begin to teach and show your kids how to be “subject” unto you. Then, when they get old they will submit and be subject unto God and not depart from it.
Jesus Himself taught us how to be subject unto stepparents by being subject unto Joseph.
